Before enrolling in medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Eric Cohen received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington. The primary campus of the Indiana University system, Bloomington joins Richmond, Kokomo, Gary, South Bend, and New Albany as the six university locations of the IU system. Boasting a student population of over 42,000 students, Indiana University enrolls more than 32,000 undergraduates.

Founded in 1820 as the State Seminary, Indiana University originally existed as a free institution designed to continue the educational projects started by township schools. After earning a state charter to begin construction on the school in 1820, Indiana University held its first classes in the fall of 1824. Indiana University experienced rapid growth during its early years, awarding the first Ph.D. in 1883 and opening the School of Music and School of Commerce and Finance in 1921. In 1945, Indiana University opened the Kinsey Institute for sexual research amid sharp controversy.

Widely recognized as a high-quality public institution, Indiana University currently enjoys a ranking of 50th among national universities, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. A number of academic programs at Indiana University rank in the top 25 nationwide, including the Maurer School of Law (23rd), the School of Library and Information Science (7th), and the Kelley School of Business (10th). Among the oldest athletic programs in the country, the Indiana Hoosiers have captured 24 NCAA championships.

by Dr. Eric Cohen, Neurologist

I am currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). One of the eight schools of the UMDNJ system, the New Jersey Medical School, based in Newark, is the state’s oldest medical school. The Roman Archdiocese of Newark founded NJMS in 1954 as the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry, originally located in Jersey City. That same year, the college incorporated as a separate entity from Seton Hall University. The State of New Jersey acquired the college in 1965, moved the school to Newark, and renamed it the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry. In 1970, the college merged with Rutgers University’s two-year medical school and became the New Jersey Medical School.

NJMS employs more than 700 faculty members and works with over 1,300 faculty volunteers. The curriculum focuses on both active learning and the importance of humanism in medicine, as well as clinical care and research. As a well-funded research facility, NJMS pursues multiple research projects such as the Global Tuberculosis Institute and the Center for Re-emerging Pathogens. It is also a member of the New Jersey Stem Cell Research and Education Foundation. Faculty and students collaborate in NJMS’s research initiatives like in the Summer Student Research Program, which encourages students to pursue research through small grants and stipends.
