Before enrolling in medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Eric Cohen received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington. The primary campus of the Indiana University system, Bloomington joins Richmond, Kokomo, Gary, South Bend, and New Albany as the six university locations of the IU system. Boasting a student population of over 42,000 students, Indiana University enrolls more than 32,000 undergraduates.
Founded in 1820 as the State Seminary, Indiana University originally existed as a free institution designed to continue the educational projects started by township schools. After earning a state charter to begin construction on the school in 1820, Indiana University held its first classes in the fall of 1824. Indiana University experienced rapid growth during its early years, awarding the first Ph.D. in 1883 and opening the School of Music and School of Commerce and Finance in 1921. In 1945, Indiana University opened the Kinsey Institute for sexual research amid sharp controversy.
Widely recognized as a high-quality public institution, Indiana University currently enjoys a ranking of 50th among national universities, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. A number of academic programs at Indiana University rank in the top 25 nationwide, including the Maurer School of Law (23rd), the School of Library and Information Science (7th), and the Kelley School of Business (10th). Bloomington is also famous for its college town atmosphere, ranking in the top 10 according to USA Today.
Athletic teams at Indiana University, known as the Hoosiers, compete in the Big Ten Conference of NCAA Division I. Among the oldest athletic programs in the country, the Indiana Hoosiers have captured 24 NCAA championships. A large number of those victories came from the men’s swimming and diving team, which captured six consecutive titles between 1968 and 1973. The men’s soccer team at Indiana University, regarded as a perennial powerhouse, has won seven NCAA championships. The men’s basketball team has also earned a fearsome reputation, boasting five NCAA titles and regular appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
